Personal computers were just beginning to be adopted by innovative law firms when Dena Rafte established Rafte & Company to meet the technology needs of the legal industry in Houston, Texas. Even though IT networks were rare at the time, Rafte & Company's services focused on bringing law firm staffers together.

Initially, Rafte & Company concentrated on legal back office needs, improving legal billing and accounting processes. As technology moved beyond administrative functions and crude database applications to the professional staff, it became clear that the real value to law firms would be using information systems and integrated processes to share information and manage the day-to-day casework.
