Are you currently seeking a business continuity plan?

You may have attempted to develop and put into place a business continuity plan in the past, but found that it was too costly or time-consuming.  With the emergence of cost-effect cloud computing and managed hosting services, what used to be cost-prohibitive is now very affordable - even for the smallest firms.

So, what exactly is business continuity? Defined on Wikipedia, it "is planning which identifies the organization's exposure to internal and external threats and synthesizes hard and soft assets to provide effective prevention and recovery for the organization, whilst maintaining competitive advantage and value system integrity”  It is also called Business Continuity and Resilency Planning (BCRP). The logistical plan used in BCP is called a business continuity plan. The intended effect of BCP is to ensure business continuity, which is an ongoing state or methodology governing how business is conducted.

Based on that definition - are you really prepared?  What happens if you have an unexpected senior management change?  What if your building floods, do you have a place to continue conducting business?  Will your workforce or clients experience downtime?

If your business is shutdown or stalled, for even two business days, the penalties are costly.  You could lose revenue - or even clients.

Some equate a disaster preparedness or recovery plan as good enough - but, it is not the same thing as a business continuity plan.  A business continuity plan addresses the following:
  • Business interruption response procedures (i.e., death of executive management team member, natural disaster, terrorist activity, pandemic flu, building flood or fire)
  • Data and information backup and recovery
  • Role identification and training for interruption prioritization and response
  • Mapping of IT systems to business processes and mission-critical paths to conducting business
  • Facility, network and data center facility details - including climate control, facility access codes, etc.
  • Vendor contact list
  • Employee and partner contact list
  • Response checklists
  • Temporary or permanent staff relocation and IT infrastructure for remote access and availability
